Anyone facing the end of their marriage could use a few good
divorce tips. First-time divorcees have no idea what they are getting into
(kind of like newlyweds, ironically), and even a simple mistake can be costly.
Divorce is a legal action that requires an attorney's help if you want to make
it through unscathed. Meet with a good divorce lawyer as soon as divorce
becomes a possibility to make sure you are prepared from beginning to end.
Here are some helpful divorce tips to fill in the gaps:
1 - Keep your emotions out of it.
The biggest mistakes in judgment happen to people who are
being led by their emotions instead of a clear, logical mind. Of course, you're
hurt and angry, but those feelings must be set aside when the process of
divorce begins. This may be the single most important of all divorce tips.
2 - Use common sense and stay in control.
This runs along the same lines as tip #1. Use your head when
making decisions and try not to let yourself lose control. If it helps, take a
step back and view the situation as an outsider. Keep things in perspective and
try to see the big picture.
3 - Get it in writing.
When decisions are agreed upon getting it in writing,
preferably in front of a reliable witness or two. This stops the old "he
said, she said" arguments from popping up down the road.
4 - Protect your credit.
Divorce can be messy in the money area. Check your credit
report as soon as the D-word is mentioned and monitor it throughout for any
changes. It is also a good idea to close any joint accounts and reopen them as
individual accounts on your own.
5 - Watch what you do on record.
Don't leave nasty messages on the answering machine or send
scathing e-mails. This activity can only come back to haunt you in the end.
Keep it cordial or don't say it at all.
6 - Leave the kids out of it.
If you have children, do whatever possible to shield and
protect them from the negative emotions that encircle divorce. This much easier
said than done, but it is vital to the health and well-being of the kids so
there can be no exceptions.
7 - Accept the situation and move on.
The sooner you accept the idea that you are getting a
divorce, the sooner you will begin healing and be able to get on with your
life. This process takes time but try to heal yourself a little bit every day
and the process will be smoother and faster.
